"Man Arrested for Burning Kitten on Grill"

A neighborhood friend of Sherry Scott holds the kitten they named 'Lucky,' in a recent handout photo.

LIBERTY, Missouri (AP) -- A man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly burning a kitten on a barbecue grill as several other people stood around and watched in amusement.

A witness pulled the scorched, 7-week-old tabby from the hot coals, but it was severely injured and had to be put to death, police said.

"They kept saying, `Meow, meow,' and they were poking at it with a stick," said Sherry Scott, who burned her hand grabbing the kitten.

Charles C. Benoit, 24, was charged with animal abuse, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. He was jailed on $10,000 bail.

Jim Roberts, spokesman for the Clay County prosecutor's office, said he does not expect anyone else to be charged, because no witnesses could identify the others.

Scott said that on Friday night, she saw 10 or 12 people at the barbecue grill in the courtyard of the apartment complex where she lives. Scott said she asked what they were cooking, and they said it was a cat. She said the group taunted her, daring her to rescue the cat.

She said the group scattered when she threatened to call police. She said she pulled the kitten from where it had been shoved into the coals at the back of the grill. Its tail, whiskers, fur, eyes and throat were scorched.

"I called him Lucky because I thought I got him out of there just in time," she said.

Scott said she and other residents stayed up Friday night trying to nurse the kitten with an eye dropper of milk. But animal control officers decided that because of its respiratory injuries and inability to swallow food, it had to be destroyed.

"If you would have seen him, you would have cried," said Sheri Simpson, one of the residents who helped care for the kitten.

could one of us be with animal abuse if we stuffed him in a barbeque grill( he certainly can't be called human), or maybe it's just me

Words cannot express the anger I feel when reading articles such as these. And I just watched Animal Precinct on Animal Planet... My tolerance for animal abuse is nil. I'd have to hurt this man and those standing around him just OBSERVING.

i just cryed for about and hour before i fell asleep. my imagination is so graphic that i have ot imagine every little thing..the screams of pain, the laughing, the smell of charred kitten in pain, the moment when they picked the poor thing up and for a second it squirmed, and perhaps thought it was going to get some love (That thought is getting to me now, at work...gotta stop thinking about it)
i almost puked.
James just held me. I read him the article becuase i say the headline. i thought it was going to be more about the man being charged...i didnt expect the graphic details. before i finished the article i was sobbing. james had red eyes the whole night too.

i was crying cause of the article, about the kitten itself, but also about humanity. we hash though life, though people, through our enviroment and dont even think. we are consciously and inconsciously cruel. yes, i knew this before. and yes, its something that talked about all the time..and yes, its hard to change (am i going to go completely vegan and stop eating ice cream?..no)
But I can be aware. I dont do things like this man did. I just wanted to put him on coals last night. I looked at my Ifrit. IF anyone did anything near to what they did to that cat...they would wish they never existed. id see to it.

sometimes, people tell me that I am too critical/synical/jaded--that my opinions of the human race as a veil, contemptuous beast not worthy of its place on the planet are unwarranted, but these stories confirm, if anything, that fact.
I hate people. stupid people. mean people. intentionally ignorent people. lazy people. destuctive people. so few of our kind are worthy enough to inhabit this world--we are vastly outnumbered by evil bastards--bbq-ing a fucking kitten... my god... what kind of sick and depraved individual must you be, to have to affirm yourself by my placing a live kitten on hot coals?
if you eat them, kill them humainly. skin them, and add some vegies and a nice sauce, but for the love of all that right and just in the universe don't put a live animal on a fire!
they stopped burning people at the stake for a reason...

The problem is that the pieces of human filth that are responsible for that animal's suffering, whether by action or inaction, will never understand the horror of what they've done. There was a great hue and cry over that US kid that was caned in Singapore a few years ago but I'm starting to think that it's not such a bad idea. If they like inflicting pain so much, let's see how much they like being on the RECEIVING end. Sometimes Karma needs a hand.

This Charles Benoit likes grills so much, would someone please roast Mr. Benoit's coconuts, cause we don't need anymore sick individuals like him. I can't believe how sick the human race can be...I thought is was bad enough when I adopted a feline lukemia postive kitten that someone had thrown out when he was only a few weeks old....
